Before Applying for Fiscal Sponsorship

Plan Your Project

Have your project completely planned. What exactly you are going to do, Research what your expenses will be and where your income would come from. You can Google expenses for Example: “Expenses involved in creating a short film”, or contact similar sources and get estimates. You can also Google” funding for film” to see where you might get your funds from. Do not apply for a grant until/after you have applied to and been approved through Art Without Limits (AWoL). Please look at our Guidance on researching and writing a grant at the bottom of this page.

Fictitious Business Name (DBA)

What states do not require DBA registration?

Most states require companies using an assumed name to register, however, 13 states (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) do not have a state filing requirement.

Generally speaking, a sole proprietor who includes his or her last name in the business name — such as O’Toole’s Classic Cars — does not need to file an FBN statement.

Federal Tax ID (EIN)

To see if you need a Federal Tax ID (EIN) click here.

Checking Account

You will need a checking account with the name of the artist or art group name on it. It must match the social security name or Federal Tax ID you are using.

Applying for Fiscal Sponsorship

We can approve applicants as fast as the same day after they have filled in all the forms in the application process and pay the fee. All funds come to us either via Paypal or a check. We create a PayPal link with your name on it so we know when the payment is for you. We also give you that link so that you can use it on your website, social media, and crowdfunding. When we get that money you fill in the expenses on a requisition form, then we pay the donations to you minus 7% for our fees. We will automatically send donation receipt letters to all who donated towards your project. We will provide their email and or address depending on what we got from them so that you have the opportunity to thank them and keep them as a future funder.

Our guidance on researching and writing a grant

  • >>HOW TO RESEARCH:

    1. Make a list of keywords related to your project.  Examples:

      1. Film

      2. Documentary

      3. Musicians

      4. Awareness

      5. Education

      6. Services

      7. Artists

      8. Writers

      9. Dance

      10. Biographies

      11. Storytelling

    2. GOOGLE “grants for [keywords]”

    >> You will likely find long lists of grants that are on the outskirts of your topics.  Save any grant information for further review that you think might tie into your project. <<

    1. Print eligible grant descriptions & catalog due dates, topics and contact information.  Spreadsheets are helpful for this process.

    2. Contact grant makers and ask whether your project is a good fit for their mission.

    3. Request grant applications from strong leads.

    4. Ask Jodi McLeod, Executive Director of AWOL, to help you review your choices for eligibility requirements prior to completing grant applications.

    >>TIPS FOR APPLYING:

    1. On grant applications, take note of specific requirements in formatting, due dates and delivery.  Small errors such as line spacing or front and back side printing can disqualify you from receiving the grant, even if your content is stellar.

    2. Storytell.  Tell the story of how you came about your project, why it is important to you, how it impacts your target audience, explain why your project is important now, and the expected outcome of your project.

    3. Include visuals (if allowed).  Refer to #1, some grantmakers have specific requirements on whether to include visual aids.

    4. Focus your budget on the project.  When developing your project budget, use categories that are directly related to producing the product, rather than administrative costs.  For example, rather than including a salary for yourself on a separate line item, include your salary figure in the role that you will take in the project (ie. production, artwork, outreach, etc.)

    5. Ask for a grant review by the AWOL Mentorship Committee at least two weeks before your due date.

    6. Triple check formatting.

    7. Submit your application in the required format ON TIME.
